Empathy is the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes and understand their feelings and emotions. This skill is particularly valuable in the health sector, where it is linked to effective communication, emotional intelligence, and emotion management. However, there is a scarcity of interventions in the literature aimed at developing this essential skill in university students. This article aims to conduct an integrative literature review to investigate the practices implemented to enhance empathy in undergraduate health students and to evaluate the effectiveness of these practices. The integrative review was conducted with scientific articles collected from the PubMed, SciELO, MEDLINE, and LILACS databases between April and June 2024. Four articles were selected for analysis and discussion based on the established criteria. The interventions identified in the studies included the use of assessment scales, coaching training programs, medical narration, reflective analysis, and group discussions. All interventions proved effective in improving students’ empathy perception, contributing to success in clinical practice. However, the adoption of mixed methods — which integrate clinical practice with the enhancement of empathy and communication — emerges as a valuable strategy to be adopted by educational institutions.
