The influence of the reader profile in the orthographic abilities
Keywords:

Purpose: As there is the hypothesis that certain habits and attitudes, like high frequency of reading, can influence the orthographic knowledge decreasing the errors of writing, the aim of this research is: to investigate the relation between different readers profiles and the learning of orthography; to verify different readers profiles from habits and attitudes; to identify a profile of orthographic ability through the amount of errors; to analyze the possible relation between readers profiles and orthography profiles. Method: 268 children from the 1st to 4th grade of a private school answered a questionnaire of habits and attitudes toward reading to define the reader profile. The children also produced some writings to define the levels of orthography knowledge. Conclusion: We realized that there is a positive influence about the reader profile in relation to the orthographic ability: as much as the reader is active, less the number of errors. On the other hand, we verified that the favorable school intervention effect in the orthographic knowledge is bigger than in the reading.
