Abstract

The origin of these work was in my dissertation. The aim of this studies was to analyze and reflect upon scientific production in graduate education programs about the theme “School and Violence”, done from 1990 to 2000 and based on Critical Theory, reference book by Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno and Herbart Marcuse. Considering scientific research as an important tool for helping clear up the reason for violence in society and specially in schools, the search filed was limited by thesis and essays about aforesaid theme catalogued in ANPEd/99 CD-ROM and USP and PUC/SP libraries. These universities were chosen not only for easy access to the empiric material but the great amount of it as well. The idea came from that researches have given attention both to physical violence and no-physical violence in their studies. Researches about school violence and violence at school have focused on lack of discipline among students, putting more emphasis on either individual or social aspects, keeping them as entities though. The studies allowed to determine violence aspects which authors give greater prominence to: psychological, sociological or both of theme, kinds of violence, their comprehension about physical violence, no-physical violence, school violence and violence at school, to observe theoretical references used in their researches, as well as, the proposals presented by theme. In these way, we are able to answer how violence, demonstrated in schools, has been studied by researches.
