Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess social skills and the presence of clinical symptoms of depression and anxiety in elementary school teachers from three public schools in the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is a quantitative, descriptive survey with a sample of 78 participants, 94.9% (n=74) of whom were female and 5.1% (n=4) male, with an average age of 44.22 years (SD=9.26). The Social Skills Inventory-2-Del-Prette (SSI-2-Del-Prette) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) were used to assess social skills. It was observed that 39.7% (n=31) had impaired social skills, indicating the need for intervention through social skills training. In relation to the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms, severe, moderate, and extremely severe scores were identified in some of the participants, although the majority had indices within the normal range. The results of the study indicate the presence of a deficient repertoire of social skills in a significant share of the sample, as well as the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms which can have a nega-tive impact on their professional performance.
