Abstract

The study presented aims to carry out the cross-cultural adaptation and assess the content validity of the Number Sense Brief (NSB) for the Brazilian context. The NSB is an instrument that originated in the USA, which assesses number sense skills (counting and number recognition, number knowledge and numerical operations) in children in the last year of Early Childhood Education and the first year of Elementary School. The study was carried out with the expectation of contributing to overcoming the shortage of instruments that assess important skills for mathematical development. In the adaptation process, recommendations from the International Test Commission (ITC) and other literature to adapt the instrument to the new reality, language and culture were factored in. Furthermore, content validity was assessed using a qualitative approach and comparative method, based on the content of the instrument and on educational curriculum documents of national scope (Brazil) for the target education levels. The study involved the following steps: translation by experts, synthesis of the translated versions, evaluation by a committee of expert judges, assessment by the target population and study on the validity of the content. The results demonstrated the suitability of the instrument for the new culture, in addition to confirming its content validity for use in the Brazilian context, since the test aligns with the content expected for students at the aforementioned school levels. After the adaptation steps were carried out, the instrument proved to be suitable for the target population and for conducting a pilot study.
