Influence of breathing disorders on learning problems
Keywords:
Learning, Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity, Sleep apnea syndrome, TonsilsAbstract
Learning performance may be influenced by many organic factors, such as visual or hearing problems, neurological disorders or failure in the psychomotor development of the child. Recently sleep-disordered breathing and sleep apnea are known to interfere in school performance. Sleep apnea is associated to hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder and other behavioral conditions. Children with this kind of sleep disorder present difficulty in memorizing new events, cognitive damage and learning disabilities. The peak incidence of the disease is around 3 and 6 years of age, which coincides with the maximum enlarged of the tonsil and adenoid, the main cause of sleep disordered breathing. An ENT specialist must do the diagnosis and treatment. Teachers and other professionals linked to education must be aware of the association between sleep disorders and breathing problems with learning disabilities. It would be mandatory to ask about them in the interview with parents and care givers.
