The text focuses on the human capacity to create symbols. Relating the capacity for symbolizing to the entire possibility of creating culture, the article presents the origin and development of this capacity in human beings. Using Genetic Epistemology as a reference, particularly regarding symbol formation, it aims to show the constructive nature of symbolic activity by reconsidering the sensory-motor processes that give rise to mental images and role-play. The constructivist perspective on the origin of symbols allows us to overcome views that either conceive representative capacity as an innate process or, at the other extreme, see it solely as a result of culture, learned through social pressure. Understanding the constructive character of representative activity enables us to grasp how symbols are prepared through the entire sensory-motor scheme and, at the same time, prepare the Concept, which is a prerequisite for logical thought. The author draws attention to the importance of this topic for education since symbolic capacity lies at the root of the learning process, essential for the realization of each person’s humanity and a prerequisite for all school learning. Furthermore, symbolic construction is present in many therapeutic strategies for remedial learning, making it essential for professionals in this area to attain a deep understanding of this capacity, which opens the doors of culture to learners.
