Abstract

This cross-sectional study analyzed the relationship between unplanned pregnancy and depressive symptoms in pregnant adolescents receiving care at Primary Health Units in the eastern zone of Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. The sample consisted of 323 adolescents, aged between 14 and 19 years, who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and the DASS-21 scale. It was found that 60.4% presented depressive symptoms, with this prevalence being significantly higher among those who had not planned their pregnancy (80.7%). Multivariate analysis showed a strong association between depressive symptoms and factors such as lack of family support, school dropout, and low income. From the perspective of critical epidemiology, the psychological distress experienced by these adolescents is understood not as an isolated individual issue, but as a reflection of structural inequalities that shape their living conditions. In this sense, unplanned pregnancy in adolescence emerges as a multifaceted phenomenon, permeated by social vulnerabilities that intensify mental health risks. It is concluded that reproductive planning strategies, articulated with intersectoral public policies, can serve as important protective factors, promoting not only maternal mental health but also better developmental conditions for both mother and child in contexts of greater social vulnerability.
